Know your skin type {normal skin}

I thought it would be helpful to kick off this blog with a series of posts called ‘Know Your Skin Type’. Everybody is unique, we all have unique skin types, which need to be cared for differently, without a one-size fits all approach. We need to be careful with DIY recipes for skin care, or when using products without understanding how they work and whether they will work for us or not. Knowing our skin type will help us prevent blemishes and breakouts as well as bring out the best in our skin. For this series we will be focusing on knowing your skin type for the face.

Genetics generally play a large role in determining which skin type an individual has, but lifestyle and habits also play a role. The type of skin you have depends on how much oil the skin produces, how sensitive it is, as well as how much water is in the skin, and the skin’s elasticity and comfort level.

The different skin types are as follows:

  • Normal
  • Oily
  • Dry
  • Combination
  • Mature
  • Sensitive

We’ll begin with normal skin, which is skin type that most people aspire to have.

How to tell whether you have normal skin

Normal skin is characterized by being healthy and radiant, having little to no blemishes, good blood circulation, a velvet like, uniform, soft and smooth texture and little to no sensitivity.

NOTE: normal skin can become drier over time, so it can involve a different kind of care later on. Always be aware of how your skin changes.

How to take care of normal skin

DOs

  • Make sure you have a gentle regular day and night skincare regimen to keep your skin supple and fresh (Keep a watch for my future post on sample skincare routines)
  • Use an exfoliant to remove impurities and dead skin cells
  • Massage your face often to improve blood circulation
  • Use a normal skin mask 2 times a week after exfoliating
  • Eat healthy and moderately (Watch out for my future post on food and beauty)
  • Drink plenty of water.

DON’Ts

  • Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that because this skin type shows little signs of blemishes that it doesn’t need to be cared for! Normal skin can still be prone to damage if not taken care of adequately.
  • Don’t use products intended for other skin types because it can interfere with the biochemical makeup of the skin
  • To maintain healthy skin avoid drinking alcohol and smoking as these habits can cause the skin to age faster.

And one last thing- don’t forget to comment below if you have normal skin and how you take care of it!
